Today, I want to share with you five tips on how to set goals.

But first, what is the importance of setting a goal?

A goal gives you focus.  A goal allows you to measure your progress.  A goal keeps you from distraction.  A goal gives you motivation.  And, a goal helps you grow.

Tip #1:  State your goal in positive terms.

Your goal must specify what you want;  not what you don’t want.

For example, I’m choosing to live at my ideal weight of 140-144 pounds.

Tip #2:  Focus on a goal within your control to achieve it.

You can control yourself and not others.

For example, I’m changing my weight for my spouse.

Rather, I’m at my ideal weight, eating in a way that would nourish me for my physical wellness and energy.

Tip #3:  Create a goal in alignment with what you value.

For example, I’m going to the gym after work every night.  This does not fit into my values of spending time with my family in the evening.

Rather, I’m going to the gym three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday during my lunch hour.

Tip #4:  Write your goal in the present tense.

Use phrases such as “I am…” and “I choose…”.

For example, I am now enjoying my ideal weight of 140-144 pounds.

Tip #5:  Craft a measurable and testable goal.

Set a measure you can identify.  It could be 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months.

For example, I’m at my ideal weight of 140-144 pounds in 90 days.

Now, think about what new behaviors you can enjoy helping you get there?

For example, I’m taking a break during my workday to go to the gym three times a week to strength train.  I’m taking a 30-minute walk with my partner after work.  I’m creating a new healthy recipe every week.  I’m taking a weekend hike with my family.

Most importantly, visualize that end success.  Imagine you’ve accomplished it.  Notice the positive changes and the behaviors you’ve engaged in to achieve this goal.

What is it for you?
